What happens during the F1® Summer Shutdown?

The mandatory 14-day break stops competition-related work across every Formula 1® team, creating a rare reset before the season resumes.

The rules behind the quietest weeks of the year.

The mandatory Formula 1® is known as the sport that never sleeps. For most of the year, that is true. Audi Revolut F1® Team is almost always preparing for the next race, planning for what comes next, or reviewing the latest on-track action. Across the team’s bases, the rhythm rarely slows. Development work, wind tunnel testing, simulator sessions and race preparation keep the factories active through much of the year. But for two weeks in the summer, that changes. Competition-related work stops, the usual movement quietens, and the team enters Formula 1®’s mandatory summer shutdown.

What is F1®’s Summer Shutdown?

F1®’s summer break usually creates the longest race-free period of the season. This year, it falls between the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix, creating almost a full month without on-track action. Within that wider break, the regulations require every team to observe a 14-day shutdown. During those 14 consecutive days, no sporting-related work is permitted. The rule exists to control costs and to give people across the paddock time away from the constant pressure of racing. Each team can choose its own shutdown dates, but the rules apply equally to all teams to ensure no competitive advantage is gained.

For Audi Revolut F1® Team, that means competition-related activity across Hinwil, Neuburg and Bicester comes to a stop. The factories will be quieter than usual, although not every form of work disappears entirely. Non-competitive tasks can still take place, and the break creates an important window for maintenance, servicing and a deep clean across key working areas. It is one of only two mandatory shutdowns across the year, the other arriving during the Christmas period. While the off-season is often viewed as downtime from the outside, the reality is different. By then, preparation for the following season is already well underway, with development of next year’s car moving at pace.

For Audi Revolut F1® Team, the shutdown brings a chance to reset before the second half of the season begins. After months of travel, race preparation and development, the next two weeks offer a rare moment of quiet in the middle of a demanding calendar. Nico and Gabi may use the time to find a beach, return to a karting track or simply step away from the intensity of a race weekend. Across the wider team, many will take the opportunity to spend time with family and enjoy a period of calm before the season accelerates again.

Even when the team is dormant by regulation, the sport never truly stops. Freight continues to move around the world, preparing for the flyaway races still to come. The calendar remains heavy, with 12 races left before the season reaches its conclusion in early December. Following the recent news that Malaysia will join the 2026 calendar to host the Bahrain Grand Prix, the final stretch now includes three triple-headers across 11 weeks. When Formula 1® returns, it does so in full force. That makes the summer shutdown more than a pause. It is a necessary reset before the next push begins.
