Silverstone: Where history lives.

Audi Revolut F1® Team will make its first appearance at Silverstone this weekend, as the latest chapter in a century of British Grand Prix history is written at one of Formula 1®’s most iconic tracks.

76 years ago, on May 13, 1950, Silverstone hosted the 1950 British Grand Prix – the first-ever round in World Championship history. An estimated 150,000 turned out to witness the race, each paying just seven shillings to be there. Plenty has changed trackside at Silverstone since, but its essence remains the same.

While last year marked the 75th anniversary of the very first World Championship race at Silverstone, this year marks the centenary of the British Grand Prix, an event which predates Formula 1®. A hundred years since the first British Grand Prix at Brooklands, Silverstone continues to carry the history while keeping an eye firmly focussed on the future.

A record-breaking weekend.

For one weekend each year, the usually quiet village of Silverstone in the Northamptonshire countryside with a population of under 3,000 becomes the place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of Formula 1® fans. From campers to coach-trippers and from first-timers to lifelong regulars, the knowledgeable crowd is made up of individuals who each have their own affinity with Formula 1®.

The British Grand Prix is
the best-attended weekend
of the entire Formula 1® season.

This year’s race is expected to set a new attendance record for Silverstone, if not a new all-time F1® attendance record. The current crown belongs to the 1995 Australian Grand Prix, the sport’s final visit to Adelaide, which had an overall attendance of 520,000. Last year’s British Grand Prix was the first since then to attract a crowd of half a million.

A motorsport festival.

What draws fans to Silverstone? Aside from the fact that the circuit continually produces breathtaking, overtake-filled, adrenaline-fuelled races, the British Grand Prix weekend has become a true motorsport festival in recent years.

Silverstone has embraced its festival feel, adding multiple stages trackside to keep fans entertained from gates opening at 6am long into the night. Headline performances by world-class artists take place on the main stage in front of a 40,000-strong crowd, interspersed with appearances from famous Formula 1® faces – including Nico and Gabi, who’ll be taking to the stage ahead of Saturday’s Sprint race.

Silverstone is a circuit that continues to evolve, honouring its history while adding more for fans to experience on race weekend. Where once were open fields are now hubs of entertainment, like the F1® Fan Zone. A former airbase, one of the area’s old aircraft hangars has been converted into the state-of-the-art Silverstone Museum, which British Grand Prix ticket holders can experience free of charge.

Held at the height of the British sporting summer, the British Grand Prix often coincides with other major sporting tournaments. This year, Wimbledon and the FIFA World Cup are running at the same time as the Grand Prix, meaning Sweet Caroline and It’s Coming Home become an unexpected soundtrack to race weekend.

If the crowd is lucky, they will get three days of sunshine and warm weather; a rarity in England at any time of year. But whatever the weather, be it sweltering in suncream or braving a downpour in a poncho, it never dampens the atmosphere. In fact, rain can add to the on-track excitement – just ask Nico, who drove from 19th on the grid to secure his long-awaited career-first podium in last year’s damp race.

Racing remains the focus.

While the spectacle around race weekend has grown exponentially over the past decade, at its heart the British Grand Prix weekend remains the same. The race is always the headline event, just as it was 76 years ago.

Away from Formula 1®, the weekend also showcases the next generation of talent. Formula 2®, Formula 3® and F1® Academy will also be taking to the track, giving junior drivers an opportunity to race at one of motorsport’s most famous tracks.

Among those relishing in the opportunity are Audi Revolut F1® Team Driver Development Programme drivers Emma Felbermayr and Freddie Slater, who each sit second in the standings in their respective series. Freddie returns home in search of a fifth podium finish of the year in Formula 3®, on a track at which he has already shown race-winning form in the lower categories.

It is somewhat of a home race for Audi Revolut F1® Team too, with the team’s UK Technology Centre located just down the road from Silverstone at Bicester Motion, in the heart of the so-called “Motorsport Valley” which so many Formula 1® teams call home.

Whether arriving for the first time or returning for another summer at Silverstone, the appeal remains the same. The combination of history, atmosphere and world-class racing makes this one of Formula 1®’s season-defining weekends. This year, Audi Revolut F1® Team adds its own name to the century-long story for the very first time.
