The race between races.

After Monaco, Audi Revolut F1® Team moves straight to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as freight, garages and hospitality are prepared for the next European round.

From Monaco to Barcelona.

Fresh from our debut on the streets of Monaco, Audi Revolut F1® Team heads straight to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the second European round of the season.

Just hours after the chequered flag fell on the Monaco Grand Prix, the streets which form Circuit de Monaco re-opened to the public. Any traces that the race took place will have disappeared within three weeks, with grandstand construction elements, barriers and catch-fencing returned to storage beyond Monaco’s borders.

A unique pack-up.

For the team, the dismantling of garages and hospitality units is a much quicker process, though Monaco still brings its own unique challenges. Unlike most other events, the paddock is located away from the pit lane, while our garages are spread across three storeys – with engineers and strategists located above the main garage instead of in their usual position on the pit wall overlooking the start/finish straight.

Monaco’s unique geography aside, the tight confines of the circuit’s pit lane and the fact that garages can be under half of the width seen at other circuits means that the space available for essential packing-up work can feel tighter than the Fairmont Hairpin on Lap 1. It is a real team effort, with all involved helping to ensure that the job is finished within five hours of the end of the race.

The challenging pack-up is made all the more demanding by the fact that the next race weekend begins in just a matter of days and tight deadlines must be met. For the first European double-header in our maiden season, the team is en route south-west to Barcelona. Within 72 hours of the Monaco race ending, we’ll be ready to go again at the Catalunya circuit.

Short distance, tight timing.

In a season which has so far featured long, transcontinental flights, this week there are fewer than 700 km between the two venues. But there is still no time to spare, with everything on site needing to be operational before the team arrives for business.

Ensuring Formula 1® is always ready for its next Grand Prix is no easy task. The race between races is a perfected art, on a scale that almost defies comprehension. Our shiny new hospitality unit alone, which is used exclusively at European races, requires 31 trucks to be transported between destinations. If all 11 teams had similar setups and transported their motorhomes together, it would form a convoy of around 300 trucks which can span up to 5 km – a distance as long as most circuits on the F1® calendar.

The road to Montmeló.

Once the trucks have left Monaco, they hug the Mediterranean coastline, through Nice, Marseille and Montpellier before crossing the border into Spain and onwards to Montmeló, home of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is located around 30 km north of the largest city in Catalonia.

There will be no formal border checks for our freight. Instead, to allow quicker transportation, customs checks, sometimes accompanied by friendly sniffer dogs, may take place on arrival at the venue itself, once all teams are on site.

Seven garage sets, one race operation.

Throughout the season, we have seven rotating sets of garages, ensuring seamless setup processes at each new venue visited. Two of those sets are used for the European races, while the remaining five are dedicated to sea freight for later rounds of the season.Set-up work begins around 10 days prior to each race weekend, with specialised crews on site well before the rest of the team arrives on Tuesday of race week, ahead of full operations beginning the following day.

For the team, 60 tonnes of equipment is transported to each race. While there is only a single set of Audi R26 challengers at the heart of the operation, there are multiple sets of almost every other essential item needed to make each race weekend run smoothly. From tool cabinets to garage walling and hospitality essentials, there are seven sets of everything, meaning our garages can be operational in mainland Europe, while other identical items are on their way to the Americas or the Middle East by sea or by air freight for later rounds of the season.

Back to Barcelona.

Thankfully for the team, we arrive in Barcelona with a much warmer climate than when we last appeared here. Five months ago, the Audi R26 made its on-track debut at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ahead of pre-season testing at the end of January.

The team returns with six Grands Prix under its belt, ready to build on its momentum as the European season gathers pace.

Share the excitement.
