Situated in the Styrian mountains, there’s a massive 60 metres of elevation between the track’s highest and lowest points – one of the biggest elevation changes all season.

With just ten turns and lap times of little more than a minute, the smallest margins mean Spielberg demands precision at every corner.

Saturday’s qualifying session can be one of the most hectic of the season. On a relatively short circuit, finding a gap in traffic becomes crucial – especially in Q1, where 22 cars will share just 4.326km of asphalt. In an ideal world, with every car circulating, there will be a gap of under 200 metres, or under three seconds, between each car. But, as we so often see, things rarely work out ideally with so many cars on track. Communication between the pit wall and the drivers will be vital.
Fine margins really matter in Spielberg. A single tenth can make all the difference at the Red Bull Ring. Those small margins are amplified further by strict track limits and unforgiving gravel traps, which have become a defining feature of race weekends in Austria in recent years.

Situated in the Styrian mountains, there’s a massive 60 metres of elevation between the track’s highest and lowest points – one of the biggest elevation changes all season.

At 700 metres above sea level, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City and Interlagos in São Paulo are the only circuits on the calendar which sit at higher altitudes.

There are just ten corners at the Red Bull Ring – but uphill hairpins, downhill braking zones and unforgiving track limits make Spielberg a track which rewards precision and punishes mistakes.

The distinctive incline of Turn 3 is a key overtaking point. The unusually profiled corner has been the scene of race-defining drama on numerous occasions.

The undercut can be powerful here. Two-stop strategies have been the order of the day in recent years and ample overtaking opportunities help facilitate alternative approaches.
