Nice to meet you, I’m Roger.

Team Lead in Composite Support

"In short, I make sure everything is prepared correctly so the production process runs smoothly and efficiently."

Did you know that our Formula 1® factory in Hinwil has ovens?

Not the kind you have at home, these are bigger (much bigger) and highly advanced machines that play a key role in manufacturing our Formula One cars.

All for One gives you the opportunity to learn from the people working behind the scenes, find out how our team operates and discover the expertise that goes into every part of our performance. This month, our spotlight is on Roger, our Team Lead in Composite Support.

  • You’ve been with the team for quite a long time, right?

"Yes, I joined in 2001, so it’s been around 25 years. I actually started as a laminator and gradually moved into the autoclave area and eventually into a leadership role. Looking back, it’s great to see how much I’ve grown professionally with this team."

  • Can you tell us about your role?

"My work focuses on preparing composite components for production. I coordinate the flow of parts between different stages, from foam and inserts machining to supporting the laminators and assemblers. I also oversee the autoclave process: loading, curing, and unloading parts. In short, I make sure everything is prepared correctly so the production process runs smoothly and efficiently."

  • The work sounds quite complex. Can you walk us through it?

"In simple terms, it starts with foam and carbon inserts machining on the ground floor. These parts are then stored until needed. I prepare and deliver the materials required for the clean room, which is the step before “baking” in the autoclave. The technical term for this “baking” process is curing, and it’s typically done at around 135 degrees and up to six bar of pressure, although the exact temperature and pressure vary depending on the component being produced. Once curing is completed, the parts are sent for finishing in the assembly department. It’s a continuous process, and every step depends on the previous one being done correctly."

  • But what is the autoclave?

"You can think of it as a very large oven that reaches high temperatures while allowing us to set and control the internal pressure. We cure carbon under controlled pressure and vacuum, which is essential to make it more resistant by removing all the air from the carbon fibres."

  • What makes your role so important for the team?

"In Formula One, precision, teamwork and timing are critical. If one step doesn’t go according to plan, the entire process is affected. In my case, without proper preparation and curing, we simply wouldn’t have usable carbon fibre parts. My role ensures that everything is ready at the right time and that components are processed correctly."

  • What do you personally enjoy most about your work?

"No two days are the same. Every day brings new challenges, and we solve them together as a team. That’s what keeps the job interesting and motivating."

  • And finally, you seem very passionate about your job. What drives your passion for Formula One?

"It’s the combination of teamwork, technology and performance. Knowing that the parts we prepare contribute directly to a racing car on track is very special. Being part of that process for so many years keeps me motivated every day."
