James Key
Technical Director
“Our ambition is to develop a car that can compete at the front of the grid. The strength of a technical organisation comes from its people and how effectively we work together. We have an incredible breadth of expertise across the team, and the key is bringing those different disciplines and locations together around a shared direction. Creating an open, collaborative culture where people can contribute, challenge ideas and learn from each other is fundamental to how we develop as a team – and ultimately to how we improve the car.”

With more than 25 years of experience at the pinnacle of motorsport, James’s Formula One career began at Jordan Grand Prix, where he progressed through the engineering ranks before becoming Technical Director in 2005. Following his first stint with Sauber, he went on to hold senior technical roles at Toro Rosso, McLaren Racing and, most recently, returned to Hinwil in 2023.
As Technical Director of Audi Revolut F1 Team, James is responsible for the overall technical direction, performance and development of the car. He leads the team’s largest single function, bringing together several hundred people across a broad range of specialist disciplines – from aerodynamics, vehicle performance and design to electronics, simulation, engineering and trackside operations.
At the heart of James’ role is ensuring these different areas work as one integrated technical organisation. Centred around the team’s Hinwil headquarters, the technical operation also draws on the capabilities of the team’s UK presence and works closely with Audi’s Power Unit operation in Neuburg. Each location and discipline brings its own expertise, but all contribute towards a common objective: developing the complete car as one seamless operation.
Beyond setting the technical direction, James places a strong emphasis on creating the environment in which people and ideas can thrive. Building collaboration across disciplines, encouraging open exchange and giving specialists the space to contribute their expertise are central to establishing the technical foundations required for the team’s long-term ambitions.
